アクトレスは2022年以降、キャリア15年目のアーティストとしては意外なほどリリースのペースを加速させている。世のなかの移ろいゆく情勢や経済状況に追いつけず、レーダーから姿を消してしまうアーティストは珍しくない。パンデミックが多くのアーティストが自身のキャリアにおける2〜3年の空白期間を省略するきっかけとなったのだろうか？ 　あるいは、それはInstagram的で過剰な情報社会への反応なのだろうか？　アーティストは、もちろんアーティストとしてあるべきであり、彼らがどのようなキャリアパスや表現のフィールドを選ぶにしても、私たちはその作品をまずは恐れや偏見なく受け止めるべきなのだ。
　インスピレーションや創造性には、経済状況における「量と質の呪い」が関わっている。果たして、「少ないこと」は本当に「より多く」や「より良いマーケティング」に繋がるのか？ 　頻繁なリリースは編集的フィルターの欠如の表れなのだろうか？　もし4年待って34曲入りのアルバムが出たとして、果たして誰かが全曲をちゃんと聴くだろうか？　そんな問いの数々に明確な答えはない。
　そうした葛藤の最中に、アクトレスはわずか1ヶ月のあいだに2つの作品をリリースした。「量と質」を比較検証してみよう。

　まずはその1枚、『Grey Interiors』（Smalltown Supersound）。これはActual Objectsとのコラボで「ベルリナーフェストシュピーレのインスタレーション作品として制作された」1トラック構成のアンビエント作品だ。
　2枚目は、『Tranzkript 1』（Modern Obscure Music）という4曲入りのEP。

　アクトレスのアンビエント色が増す最近の作品群は、若かりし頃の彼がレコードでやることを恐れていた領域——すなわち、自らの多様な感情に深く潜り込み、定型的な繰り返しから解放され、トラックに人間味ある呼吸を与える——へと踏み出している。彼のライヴを観たことがある幸運な人ならわかると思うが、最近の彼のアンビエントに対するスタンスは、彼のライヴ・セットに近く、従来の6分以内の楽曲が多いアルバム群はどちらかといえば風景スケッチ的だった。それゆえ、ライヴを体験したことのないファンには、これらの長尺トラックが単なる高慢な実験のように見えるかもしれない。

　『Grey Interiors』は、彼のディスコグラフィーのなかでももっとも尖った作品とは言えないが、2024年の『Дарен Дж. Каннінгем』に続き、確実により冒険的な作品のひとつである。他のアンビエント系アーティストの作品に似た響きを持っているかもしれない。しかし、成長とは、開花して初めて明らかになるものだ。その途中の過程は評価されず、結果だけが見られる——それは実に残念なことだ。
　20分間にわたって『Grey Interiors』は、柔らかく曖昧なシンセの層に支えられながら、浮遊する雲の上へと上昇していく。そこにはアクトレスらしいインダストリアルな美学を象徴する、機械的で独特な緊張感が常に流れている。繰り返される機械音が互いに語り合い、やがて全体の会話そのものへと変化していくなか、突然クラブ・ビートが介入し、ブレイクビーツのような親しみのある感触を呼び起こす。そうしてアンビエントからは脱し、緊張感もやわらぎ、まるでバレエを見ているような感覚に包まれて終わる。

　一方、『Tranzkript 1』は、これまでの作品と同様の音的領域に存在している。各トラックは短く、捻れたアンビエント・メロディがぶつかり合いながら、より簡潔に展開していく。たとえば“Kjj_”や“Guardians”などの曲は、まるで宇宙飛行士が地球を見下ろしながら帰還について考え、カプチーノを飲んでいるようなSF映画を思わせる心地よさがある。『Tranzkript 1』は、巨大な芸術的声明ではないが、深い思索や内省に浸るための心地よい一滴だ。

　長く続くムードのうねりであれ、アヴァンギャルドな短編小説のようにミニマルな音にスポットライトを当てたものであれ、アクトレスが音を通じて聴覚の楽しみに捧げる献身こそが、「質と量の両立は可能である」という議論において彼を勝者たらしめている。そしてそれは、ありがたいことに本当なのだ。

Actress’s pace in releases since 2022 has accelerated much faster than one would expect for an artist 15 years in. Falling off the radar is a common trend with artists sometimes not able to keep up with the progressive and economic state of the evolving world. Was the pandemic an impetus for forgoing the 2 to 3 year hiatus that many artists including himself steer their careers by? Or more of a reaction to our hyper Instagram information culture? Artists should be artists, of course and the course they decide to take in their career trajectory and field of expression should be allowed and accepted without fear or prejudice so that the well of their artistry can overflow.

The pain of inspiration and creativity in the world economy derives from the curse of quantity vs quality. Is less really more and better for marketing? Are frequent releases a sign of lack of an editorial filter? If I wait 4 years for a new album of 34 tracks, does anyone actually listen to all the tracks? Questions upon questions are not easy to answer. In the middle of this ongoing dilemma, Actress has released not one but two releases within one month. So now the quantity vs quality can now be tested.

First is Grey Interiors (Smalltown Supersound), a one track ambient track made “as an installation piece for the Berliner Festspiele” with Actual Objects. The second, a four track ep, Tranzkript 1 (Modern Obscure Music).

Actress’s growing ambient tinged work does what the younger artist was more afraid to do on record ; dig deeper into his many moods, break away from formulaic repetition and let the track breathe more humanly. If you have had the luck to see Actress live, then you know that his current headspace with ambient music is closer to his live set whereas his many albums of cuts, mostly under 6 minutes, are closer to scenic sketches. Those of his fans without the pleasure though may view these longer tracks as just vein experiments.

Grey Interiors isn’t the edgiest Actress album of his discography but it is definitely one of the more adventurous ones following in line with 2024`s Дарен Дж. Каннінгем. It may be reminiscent to other ambient releases by other artists in tenor. But growth isn’t clear until it’s finished flowering. The in between process isn’t valued. Only the result and that is a shame.

In 20 minutes, Grey Interiors ascends above floating clouds supported by soft, amorphous plushy synths continuous under an underlying mechanical distinctive tension typical of Actress`s industrial ethos. Machine repetitions that grow to talk more to each other eventually becoming the total conversation before a club beat interferes with mild breakbeat familiarity. No longer ambient, the remaining edge of anticipation is relieved leaving with a feeling of watching a ballet.

Tranzkript 1 (Modern Obscure Music) exists on more familiar sonic territory along with previous releases. Briefer in track length, more concise with off-kilter ambient melodies colliding into each other like the track Kjj_ or Guardians, which pleasantly reminds me of a sci-fi film where astronauts are above the earth contemplating return while sipping cappuccinos. Tranzkript 1 isn`t a giant artistic statement but rather a pleasant dip into deep thoughts and ruminations.

Whether elongated mood swings or spot light focused on minimal sound a la avant garde short stories, Actress`s dedication to aural enjoyment means he wins the argument of quality / quantity showing thankfully you can have both.
